How do you spot a robot mimicking a human?  Or how do you recognise and deactivate a rebel servant robot?  Those are just some of the questions that are asked on the back cover of Daniel H. Wilson’s book aptly titled, “How to Survive a Robot Uprising – Tips on defending yourself against the coming rebellion”.

This 176 page book really goes in to detail on everything you could possibly want to know about surviving a robot attack.  Who else would be better to advise than the author who has a Master’s degree in Robotics and Data Mining and has worked at Microsoft and Intel research labs.

How to Survive a Robot Uprising starts with a relatively calm notion that articulate humanoid-like robots are still in the laboratory stage, but it does go in to great detail on the potential forms of robotics that you can expect to see in the near future, and what to do if, or when, they become rogue.

It’s not all a laugh and a joke though.  The content in this book has been based on real research and interviews with those involved in the cutting-edge of robotics technology from the likes of NASA and the military.  Wilson also provides plenty of techniques and tips on how to manufacture your own weapons out of household products and equipment.  My favourite has to be the radiation gun created from parts of a microwave that can be used to indefinitely put a stop to your attacker.  In the event of a pursuit, you will want to make sure you’ve covered the chapter about robotic spies and how to avoid radar and satellite detection.

With a part-humour and part-seriousness perspective, it’s an entertaining read that will satisfy both the geek and non-geek audience.  Just don’t forget to keep an eye out for mysteriously disappearing scientists in your daily newspapers…
