Back in March, we reviewed a book entitled “Learn C on the Mac”. By now, you should have managed to progress through most of the book, and be ready for the next stage of Xcode development. Learn Objective-C on the Mac is another Apress book packed full of tutorials, coding samples and much more.

With Learn Objective-C on the Mac, you get a gentle introduction to working and thinking in an object-oriented method. So for those who aren’t familiar with the concept, you needn’t worry, as this book is designed to walk you through the very basic fundamentals. Starting with the infamous “Hello World” which then lead on to more demonstrative practices using code that you can try out yourself.

If you’re a newcomer to OS X development or programming in C, you may find “Learn C on the Mac” to be less overwhelming and a better introduction to the development environment. If however, you’re bringing your programming skills from other languages such as C++ or Java, then you should feel right at home. And you won’t have to worry too much about the development tools, as there is a brief section that provides you with the essential tips and tricks on getting the most out of Xcode.

By the end of this book, you should have enough experience to start writing your own applications for the Mac and explore development on the iPhone – the worlds largest and most popular mobile application store.

It’s not a book that you can simply blast through. Mainly because of the in-depth nature of this book, it wants to ensure that you have all of the information you need for writing streamlined code. Expect this book to take two to three months to complete from cover to cover, with 17 chapters and over 300 pages packed with information, code samples and walkthroughs.

To save you some time, Apress do include the code downloads for the tutorials. This will remove the need to write out every line of code in the book – and instead concentrate on understanding the concepts and applying it to your own application development.
