The Undercover Scientist attempts to solve some of life’s mysteries that often leave most of us baffled. Peter J. Bentley uses science to logically explain why we experience the misfortune and mishaps that occur in everyday life.

From getting lost to the reason why our cars use different types of fuel, Undercover Scientist provides logical scientific explanations to help us understand the reasons why certain things happen, and through this understanding, how we can try to limit or prevent these mishaps from taking place.

The book starts with a very familiar scenario in which you wake up realising that you’re late. Your day is described to get progressively worse in what is not that dissimilar to a day in the life of Jack Bauer from the hit TV show “24″. Perhaps Jack should read this book to avoid any further calamities.

I first noticed this book when it was humorously titled “When Sh*t Happens”, however the UK release is called “Investigating the mishaps of everyday life”. Not quite as catchy as the US-release, but none-the-less it’s the content that matters and you can’t say there’s a lack of it in the 200+ pages describing what must be the worst day ever.

It’s an interesting read, but not one that you would want to read from cover to cover in one sitting. More of a book that you’ll dip in and out of, chapter at a time.
