“Marc Johns creates whimsical drawings filled with dry wit and humour. Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He’s been drawing since he was tiny. He’s not tiny anymore, but he’s not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he’s talking about himself in the third person…”

From first glance at the front cover, you immediately get the sense that this book, titled “Serious Drawings” is not going to be your typical book. Full of humorous and wacky drawings that have been collected together to form a two-part book by Marc Johns.

You open the book up to the first section ‘serious drawings on plain paper’ which contain Marc’s most popular drawings that have been created to reflect the joys and sadness of life and sometimes the irony behind it all.

‘Serious drawings on sticky notes’ is where you’ll find my favourite – ‘O for OMFG’ as well as the front cover image ‘H is for Holy Crap’. The drawings you find in this book largely follow a similar concise and blunt statement that is accompanied by a vivid illustration.

Some of the pages may make sense, but some will just bedazzle you. For those that don’t make sense, you can at least admire the clean and simple drawings that are both quirky and yet somehow familiar.

Altogether, there’s 144 pages of Marc John’s fantastic work that combine to make an excellent compilation of his work full of dry wit and humour. Only in this book will you pigs dangling on strings make sense.
